The sandwich plate (although not really sandwiched) is 2.5mm thick which makes it a more sacrificial part in a serious crash. This plate is designed to fracture first and relief pressure, before breaking the more complicated and thicker "top plate" which is connected to the electronics. This saves you lots of time on repairs!
